ADHD Travel Packing Checklist

Packing the night before at midnight is a tradition we would like to retire. Packing in layers changed it: the things you cannot replace go in first, so a late, rushed pack still gets you there.

Quick answer

How do you pack for a trip with ADHD without forgetting things?

Pack in layers. First the items you cannot replace at your destination: ID or passport, phone and charger, wallet, any medication, glasses and offline copies of bookings. Then clothes and toiletries, then comfort extras. Use the same checklist every trip so you are not rebuilding it from memory.

Why this order

  • Irreplaceable items first: almost everything else can be bought on arrival, these cannot.
  • Clothes are counted by days, which turns an open question into simple arithmetic.
  • The photo of the packed suitcase helps later with lost-luggage claims and with the 'did I pack it?' worry.

If you get stuck halfway

If packing never starts, put the empty suitcase open on the bed two days before. It is a visible reminder and a place to drop things as you think of them.

How long it takes

  • Can't forget: about 8 min
  • Clothes and basics: about 24 min
  • Comfort and extras: about 32 min

Frequently asked questions

When should I start packing with ADHD?

Put the suitcase out two days before and pack the can't-forget layer first. Clothes can go in the night before.

How do I stop overpacking?

Count outfits by days plus one spare, and pack one pair of walking shoes. Anything you are unsure about stays home.
