ADHD Moving Checklist

A move is hundreds of small tasks with deadlines, which is close to the hardest shape a project can have for an ADHD brain. Breaking it into three stages, and only looking at the current one, is what kept us from freezing.

Quick answer

How do you plan a move with ADHD?

Only look at the current stage. First week: set the date, book movers or helpers, get boxes and pack an open-first box list. Two weeks before: change your address, sort utilities and pack one room at a time, labeling by room and contents. Moving week: confirm, clean the fridge, and make the bed first.

Why this order

  • The date and the movers come first because every other task depends on them.
  • Least-used rooms get packed first, so daily life keeps working until the last days.
  • Making the bed first at the new place means that however chaotic day one is, you have somewhere to sleep.

If you get stuck halfway

If the whole move feels impossible, set the level to the first stage and do only one item today. A booked date is a real start.

How long it takes

  • Start this week: about 1 hr
  • Two weeks before: about 3 hr
  • Moving week and after: about 4.5 hr

Frequently asked questions

How far ahead should I start planning a move?

Around four to six weeks is common, so you have time to book movers and change your address without a rush. The first stage of this list takes only a few hours.

What goes in an open-first box?

Everything you need on the first night and morning: chargers, toilet paper, bedsheets, a towel, medication, snacks, a mug, and a few basic tools.
