Body doubling: what it means in ADHD
Quick answer
What Is Body Doubling for ADHD?
Body doubling is doing a task while another person is present, in the room, on a video call or in an online co-working session. The other person does not help with the task. Many people with ADHD report that simply having someone there makes it easier to start and stay on track. Research on it is limited.
What it looks like in real life
- Finally doing your taxes because a friend sat with you doing her own admin.
- Cleaning the kitchen while on the phone with your sister.
- Joining a silent online co-working room to answer emails.
- Working better in a café than at home.
Why it happens
A present person adds gentle accountability and a cue that it is 'work time'. It can also lower the boredom and isolation that make dull tasks hard to start. Most of what we know comes from lived experience and coaching practice, not large studies.
What helps
- Ask a friend for a 30-minute call where you both do one boring task.
- Try a free online co-working session with cameras on.
- Say your task out loud at the start and what you finished at the end.
- Keep sessions short and specific.
Frequently asked questions
Does body doubling work online?
Many people find it does. Video calls and virtual co-working rooms can give the same sense of someone being there as working side by side.
Does the body double have to help?
No. They can do their own thing. Their presence is the point, not their help.
